[Friendships in High School vs College]

BLOG #3

When looking at these two photos I bet you can tell which one is which. The first one from high school and the second the first few weeks of college. I chose these two because with the first picture you can see some of my best friends that I have had for my whole life. All the way from pre-school to high school and on. They will always be my friends but the scary thing is that upon coming to college, the quest for brand new relationships starts. It doesn’t matter who your friends were in the past or how you and they behaved, it is what you and your new friends are going to do.

The bond between friends in college are way stronger than those in high school. In high school, the things you have to deal with and struggle with are a lot less than in college. Upon arriving in my dorm room on the first day, saying goodbye to my parents was incredibly scary. The unknown and excitement was an emotional roller coaster. Luckily I quickly realized that everyone else is going through the same things. In a Harvard magazine article a student reflected back on why some of her relationships meant more, lasted longer, and overall had a stronger bond:

“Regardless of how we grew up and the nature of the friendships we made before college, many of us left home to live away from our families for the first time. We left not only to get an education, but also to grow into the independent adults we are expected to be after graduation. We left to learn about ourselves, to discover who we are, and who we want to be.”

Do not worry about making friends in college. They will come. You will find your people. Even if you do not make great friends right off the start, they will develop over time once you get more into the swing of things.

It really does not matter where you came from or how much money you have. You are all in it together on a journey that you can only live once. The late night talks, long study sessions, and the adventures coming back from parties will bond you like no other.
