Blog #8
I am currently rushing a fraternity at Chico State and I can say it can be overwhelming. At Chico, you can not rush as a first-semester freshman. This means that you have a full semester to see if you want to join a fraternity. Also, you get to make an educated decision of which ones hold the same values as you and which ones you will fit in the most. If you are considering rushing at all please read the rest of this blog.
The process of rushing at Chico is as follows:
- Make fraternity friends first semester
- Go to rush week first semester and meet the guys even if you can’t actually rush till next semester.
- Go to rush week second semester (monday-thursday is open anyone can go)
- Get called back for a private dinner on the same Friday
- Get a bid
- Now you’re a pledge and have to go through a lot
- 8ish weeks later you get initiated and you are in a fraternity.
I had the pleasure of making friends in four different fraternities and this helped me immensely. Frats are looking for people who can be social, active within the fraternity, and sadly how you look and behave. Going out and partying with a variety of different frats can show that you are interested in joining their brotherhood. If you go and have fun and click with a few actives, when it comes around to get a bid, it will be easier to get in and be comfortable in the decision you made.
What to expect when being a pledge can very from frat to frat. Each brotherhood has a different process. For me, I have experienced a great process because I choose a group of guys who genuinely care about you and want to make you a better person, all while drinking and having fun.
The link below is a helpful thing to read if you are in the middle of rushing a fraternity and not sure if you are actually fitting in.
